Overview:

Physicians have a focus of assuring appropriate diagnosis and treatment of their patients. Challenges occur when the focus becomes patient flow, regulatory requirements and medical necessity criteria, which are not usually a focus during the physician’s education. There are two groups of physicians who are key collaborators with case managers: Hospitalists and Physician Advisors.

Hospitalists are taking the role of attending physician, allowing specialists to be the consulting physicians. They take responsibility for assuring a timely transition through the hospital, providing timely consultations, taking the lead in coordination of care by all specialists, and assuring medical necessity. Hospitalists should be the best practice physician group in any hospital. Case managers are the liaisons with hospitalists to assure optimal outcomes. While the hospitalist has the responsibility for timely transitions, the physician advisor’s task is to coordinate these outcomes with all attending physicians, with a primary focus on medical necessity.

Because case managers work extensively with both hospitalists and physician advisors, it is imperative that they partner up with these two key physician groups to overcome barriers of delay and denials. This session will discuss how to build this collaborative relationship and optimize patient outcomes.
