Is your hospital planning properly and complying to protect patient confidentiality?

Hospitals need to plan to protect the privacy, security, and integrity of data and the information it collects. Maintaining privacy has become much more challenging especially in the electronic era. Violation of the privacy standard can result in patients being able to sue, action by the Office of Civil Rights, enforcement by the state attorney general, compliance issue with both The Joint Commission and Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and more. This has become more detailed in light of HITECH and recent federal laws.

During this 90-minute webinar, nurse attorney Sue Dill Calloway will cover the 8 standards in The Joint Commission’s Information Management (IM) chapter which includes the capturing, storage and retrieval of data, monitoring data and health information management processes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify The Joint Commission Information Management chapter requirements.
  • Discuss why the hospital must have a written policy addressing the privacy of health information.
  • Describe why medical records must be accessible 24 hours a day.
  • Explain why a hospital must have a policy on acceptable abbreviations.

Target Audience:

  • Director of Health Information Management
  • Medical Records staff
  • Joint Commission coordinator
  • Chief Nursing Officer
  • Privacy Officer
  • Chief Medical Officer
  • Chief Operating Officer
  • Nurse Managers
  • Compliance Officer
