Product Description

There are currently 50 million people in the US, or one in five residents who speak languages other than English at home. Patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) have a higher than average readmission rate both to the hospital and the emergency department and they suffer a higher number of adverse events.

Listen and watch this 90-minute webinar where nurse attorney Sue Dill Calloway will cover The Joint Commission’s latest standards on patient-centered communication and the new proposed CMS condition of participation changes on visitation because hospitals have to develop a system-wide language access program, implement regular training and education, establish new policies and procedures, and get senior leadership involved!

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe The Joint Commission standards on patient centered communication including the requirement to make sure that all interpreters are qualified.
  • Discuss what must be documented in the medical record including the patient’s preferred language for discussing healthcare.
  • Recall how to locate a copy of the document on “Advancing Effective Communication, Cultural Competence, and Patient and Family Centered Care: A Roadmap for Hospital.”
  • Discuss why CMS requires a visitation policy that cannot discriminate against same sex partners.

  • Chief Nursing Officer
  • Ethics Committee
