TRUSTED FOR FOUR DECADES.
This program will discuss the CMS hospital CoP changes to the section on IV medication and blood transfusion. This is the fifth time this section has been amended in the past few years. This program will also discuss the Nov. 20, 2015 guidelines on medication safety, compounding, beyond use date, and adding medications to an IV. There are many hospitals struggling to comply with these standards.
CMS says that while these procedures exist in the nursing section, hospitals are expected to meet the related requirements found in the pharmacy and quality assessment and performance improvement sections.
Hospitals are required to maintain policy and procedure. All staff should be educated on the policy. The memo that made changes to IV medication and blood also added guidelines for safe opioid use.
