TRUSTED FOR FOUR DECADES.
CMS has issued memos instructing hospitals to follow particular standards of care, such as those issued by ISMP, the CDC standards on safe injection practices, and the four unsafe injection practices that can earn a facility a second survey, this time from the state epidemiologist.
More than 90% of hospitalized patients receive some form of infusion therapy. The immediate bioavailability of intravenously administered drugs makes injection safety and safe injection practices that much more critical to the safety of patients. Most hospitals and other healthcare facilities assume staff follow these practices and standards appropriately, but recent studies tell another story.
Hospitals should educate staff, including physicians, on all standards and guidelines while regularly performing compliance checks. CMS will check compliance with safe injection practices during all validation, certification, and re-surveys.
